April 22 Composers Concordance Concert will also feature Jay Kauffman Paintings and Prints, Sigur Ros…and Foot Tambourine

Here’s what you need to know about this concert: I get to play some Sigur Ros (one of my favorite bands) I get to play foot tambourine. I get to have my prints and paintings shown. 

Also, it will be exciting and entertaining concert, packed with adventurous, fun music and top-notch musicians.

It’s great to be part of a concert that is bent on expanding the guitar repertoire, especially ensemble music with classical guitar—something in serious need of expansion!

A variety of excellent composers and musicians are involved—but most of the concert will revolve around a fantastic guitar quartet with Oren Fader, Greg Baker, and Nadav Lev and myself. We will share the stage with violinist Mary Rowell, cellist Justin Kantor, and flutist Kaoru Watanabe,There will also be a new guitar duet (a competition winner) played by Oren and Nadav, and some solo pieces. I’ll be playing a beautiful piece called Elegy in the Old Style by Russian composer Igor Vorobyev. I’m also playing a movement of a solo composition prizewinning piece by Saad Haddad. 

There is a lovely guitar quartet called “Fairytale” by Daniel Schnyder,  and a really cool piece called “No One Listens To” by Gene Pritsker, for guitar quarted, cello & violin.  The music even includes some Sigur Ros: Festival, beautifully arranged by Gene for 4 guitars and cello. Another rocking Septet by Dan Cooper, (with all 7 musicians but featuring the flutiest Kaoro, is where I premiere my budding expertise at playing foot tambourine and guitar at the same time.

The Bernie Wohl Community Center’s concert space doubles as an art show-room, and the manager of the space saw my work and offered to display it there for the evening. So if you haven’t had a chance to see my paintings and prints in person, this will be a good chance to do so. I will be working hard to finish a few new paintings and have them ready—so expect to see one or two that you haven’t seen before!

On Saturday, April 22nd at 7:30pm, Composers Concordance, in conjunction with Goddard Riverside Community Arts, presents its 7th annual ‘Generations’ concert, featuring the music of acclaimed composers Sean Hickey, Melissa Grey, Dan Cooper, Gene Pritsker, Igor Vorobyov, Daniel Schnyder, Kaoru Watanabe, Faye Ellen Silverman, and Craig Pallett, as well as competition winners in two categories: 25 or younger and 65 or older. Featuring the CompCord Guitar Quartet: Oren Fader, Greg Baker, Jay Kauffman, and Nadav Lev, as well as soloists Mary Rowell – violin, Justin Kantor – cello, and Kaoru Watanabe – flute. Staying in rotation for 32 years in NYC is a rare feat. In the case of a new music presenting organization, it requires not only diligence and cognizance of achievements of the past, but also an ethic of keeping one’s ear to the ground for emerging stylistic and technological developments, as well as talented new composers on the scene. Composers Concordance strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. It has also created a record label, Composers Concordance Records, with distribution by Naxos. Directors Gene Pritsker and Dan Cooper co-curate the programs, and lead the CompCord Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Big Band. Associate Directors are Milica Paranosic, Peter Jarvis, Svjetlana Bukvich, and Melissa Grey.
