About My Art

I want my art to be a doorway that is always ajar, inviting you to step inside and take few breaths of the air in a slightly magical world.

Many of my works are fantastical and whimsical. They are, one might say, unrealistic. But the world I am trying to evoke for you is one that does actually exist.

It exists for anyone who has gotten carried away listening to a piece of music,  caught in the flow of fascination in a book, mesmerized themselves while practicing an instrument, or while engaging fully in any meaningful challenge or task.

It’s the world of listening and feeling and sensing more and more deeply, the world that all artists and musicians and storytellers dip their souls into for inspiration.

If something in you connects with something in one of my paintings or drawings, then it might be that there’s a particular corner of this deeper world that we both share in common.

My current project is an attempt to balance my life between music and art. It’s a challenge, but perhaps I’m up to it. This website is my way of finding out.

Music colors and shapes and shades the drawings and paintings I create.

The marks and swirls and suggested worlds in my art become tones and feelings and enchantments within my music as well.

My hope is that a painting or print of mine on your wall, or on a card given to someone significant to you, will serve to spread some of that enchantment  to your life, in a small but meaningful way.

About Me

I’m a guitarist, composer and teacher who also draws and paints and writes. I have graduate performance degrees from the Juilliard School and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and have studied with many prominent classical guitarists and teachers, such as Sharon Isbin, David Leisner, Eliot Fisk, and Clare Callahan. As an undergrad I minored in Art while majoring in Music, at Goshen College, Indiana.

Even though I went on to make my living as a musician in New York city,  over the years I often indulged obsessively in my other artistic passions. I made a number of covers for classical guitar magazines. I wrote a 500-page fantasy novel about music, and I illustrated various versions of it.disjointedguitarist

It’s a real challenge to try to do “everything.” In our culture we are usually encouraged to specialize. But my goal is to find a way to synergize all of the artistic mediums I enjoy into something that communicates the connections between them all.

While many of the initial works on this site were created years ago, I am returning to the techniques of watercolor, mixed media, pen & ink, getting to know and develop them again, and creating a new body of work, which you’ll see here!
